Engaging Adolescents™

Engaging Adolescents™ is a 3-week (6 hour) parent course that helps parents and carers of 13-18 year olds to develop greater confidence in parenting adolescents and to build stronger relationships with their teens.

Topics covered in the program include:

  • understanding adolescence: a time of reconstructions, brain snaps and body make-overs
  • identifying “normal” teenage behaviour and reasonable expectations to hold about teens
  • understanding our job as a parent of a teenager – observer, advisor, negotiator, director
  • deciding what’s worth reacting to and what’s not
  • how to manage challenging teen behaviours and deal-breakers
  • how to hold tough or difficult conversations more successfully
  • how to build positive, healthy and respectful relationships with your teen

What’s involved?
The Engaging Adolescents™ program involves 3 x 2hr weekly sessions for parents or carers to attend. Both parents are encouraged to attend, where possible.

The next Engaging Adolescents™ program will be offered at Q-Psych when a sufficient number of parents have registered their interest (register here). Sessions will be conducted either during the day or in the evenings, depending on the preference of the majority of registered parents (note your preference when you register!).

The program is conducted at Q-Psych’s psychology centre in Grange. Central location. Free on-site parking.  Address and map available here.

176BAR_EngagingAdolescents_SMALL_1One parent attending: $50.00 per hour (x 6) = $300.00 before rebates (see below). Cost includes:

  • a comprehensive parent workbook containing presentation slides, worksheets, FAQ’s, summaries of key points, and more (published by Parentshop), plus
  • a useful magnet to help remind parents what to do when faced with a tricky situation.

Two parents attending (50% discount for second parent): $75.00 per couple per hour (x 6) = $450.00 before rebates.

Medicare rebates
Participating parents may be eligible for a Medicare rebate of $64.95 per program.  To receive the Medicare rebate, participants must be referred by their GP for group parent management strategies under Medicare’s Better Access to Mental Health Care initiative.  Referrals are at your doctor’s discretion.

*Participants who have reached their Medicare Safety Net may receive a 80% rebate of their gap fee (capped). To find out more, call Medicare on 13 20 11.

Gap fee (cost to you)
Total gap fee, where one parent receives the Medicare rebate = $235.05
Total gap fee, where both parents receive the Medicare rebate = $320.10 per couple

*Participants who have reached their Medicare Safety Net may receive a 80% rebate of their gap fee (capped). To find out more, call Medicare on 13 20 11.

Private health
Participants may be eligible for private health rebates and private health funds may rebate more than Medicare for group treatment services. Please check your policy with your private health insurer. NB: Medicare and private health rebates can not be claimed for the same service. However, one parent may receive a Medicare rebate and the other parent may receive a private health rebate. Or, both parents may claim private health rebate, pending their policy.

To secure your place on the course, the full cost of the program is to be paid prior to commencing.  Medicare and private health rebates can be processed on-site at Q-Psych at the time of attending each session. Rebates can only be claimed for sessions attended. In the case of Medicare, six participants must be in attendance to qualify for the rebate (Medicare rule, not ours!). The course may be cancelled or rescheduled if minimum numbers are not confirmed by the payment due date. Payments will be fully refunded if the program is cancelled, but payments are not refundable once the program is confirmed to proceed.

Individual sessions
Individual parent sessions are also available during normal business hours at $170 per hour, before rebates. Parents assessed to have a mental illness may be eligible for a Medicare rebate of $84.80 per individual session.  To qualify for the Medicare rebate, participants must be referred by their GP or psychiatrist for six individual parent management strategies under Medicare’s Better Access to Mental Health Care initiative. The gap fee per session, after receiving Medicare rebate = $85.20 or less if you qualify for the Medicare Safety Net*.
