Engaging Adolescents™

Engaging Adolescents™ is a 3-week (6 hour) parent course that helps parents and carers of 13-18 year olds to develop greater confidence in parenting adolescents and to build stronger relationships with their teens.

Topics covered in the program include:

  • understanding adolescence: a time of reconstructions, brain snaps and body make-overs
  • identifying “normal” teenage behaviour and reasonable expectations to hold about teens
  • understanding our job as a parent of a teenager – observer, advisor, negotiator, director
  • deciding what’s worth reacting to and what’s not
  • how to manage challenging teen behaviours and deal-breakers
  • how to hold tough or difficult conversations more successfully
  • how to build positive, healthy and respectful relationships with your teen

What’s involved?

To qualify for the Medicare rebate, participants must be referred by their GP or psychiatrist for group-based parent management strategies under Medicare’s Better Access to Mental Health Care initiative. Referrals are at your doctor’s discretion.

Participants may also be eligible for private health rebates and private health funds may rebate more than Medicare for group treatment services. Please check your policy with your private health insurer. (NB: Medicare and private health rebates can not be claimed for the same service. However, one parent may receive a Medicare rebate for their group sessions and the other parent may receive a private health rebate for their group sessions. Or, both parents may claim private health rebate, pending their policy).

To secure your place on the course, the full cost of the program is to be paid prior to 22 August 2016. Medicare and private health rebates can be processed on-site at Q-Psych at the time of attending each session. Rebates can only be claimed for sessions attended. In the case of Medicare, six participants must be in attendance to qualify for the rebate.
